Maybe a Minute

It’s a long distance call, so he only has enough change for maybe a minute, but it’s enough. He doesn’t think he’ll even be able to say anything. He just needs to hear her voice.

There’s ringing, and then there’s a click and a whir and suddenly there she is, on the other end. Her voicemail, telling him to leave a message. It’s her, sounding normal, talking to him like he could be anybody and not him. It’s the best and worst thing he’s ever heard.

He can’t leave a message. He hears the change clink when he hangs up.

Familiar and painful. Well done, this one’s a winner.
