The World War
The war between the Sky and the Earth started with the animals: eagles flew bombing runs on the herds of the plains, apes fashioned nets out of vines and snagged low-fliers, geese ravaged bears, raccoons shook down bees’ nests.
From there, things escalated.
Hurricanes made landfall with alarming regularity, through all the seasons. Volcanoes erupted, belching ash into the stratosphere to do battle with the cumulonimbus. Rock and dust sent mighty fists against the thunder and lightning.
The Ocean watched, and waited, biding its time.
And through it all, here we were, mouths open, trying to figure where we stood.
